3 wheeler pushchairs are a very contemporary design and their styling tends to be sporty and suggest an active lifestyle.
Most 3 wheeler pushchairs have soft tyres rather than solid or gel-filled tyres which adds to the sporty, off-road look. If you get a pushchair with soft tyres you run the risk of getting punctures so make sure you know how to deal with this eventuality before you buy and don’t presume that because a buggy looks like an off-roader it is suitable for rough terrain!
A plus point for soft tyres though is that they provide better suspension so they add to the comfort of your baby if the terrain isn’t completely smooth.
3 wheeler pushchairs are also often associated with modern mums and dads jogging with them but not all of them are suitable for this so it is an important technical specification to check if you are looking for one to push while jogging.
Lots of brands make 3 wheeler pushchairs but probably one of the best known for them is Quinny as most of their ranges include 3 wheelers. Other well-known brands that have good 3 wheeler pushchairs include Phil and Teds, Maxi Cosi, Urban Detour, Jane, Mountain Buggy, Britax and Baby Jogger. It is a good idea to have a look at a few different ones before you choose the one that is suitable for you as there are loads of different sizes and styles.
A common problem to look out for with some 3 wheelers is the size of the back wheel width as it can be too wide to fit through some doors, such as train doors if you travel on public transport, and even doors of cafes and shops. Even if the specification of the pushchair states that they fit through standard width doorways not all doorways are standard and some pavements can be very narrow as well. If you live in a busy town or city this can be an important factor to consider. Look for the unfolded width dimensions to compare the size of different buggies.
If your baby is under 3 months remember to check which 3 wheeler pushchairs are suitable for babies from birth, as some do not recline to a completely flat position and are only suitable for babies over 3 months. Most 3 wheeler pushchair frames will have adaptors to allow a carry cot to be attached so this is always an option for new babies and then you can use the pushchair as your baby grows.
A popular 3 wheeler is the Quinny Buzz 3-wheeler pushchair, which comes in black, strawberry, midnight, and new colours racoon, greystone, breen and iron. It is a very contemporary design that is suitable from birth and has a flexible seat unit that allows your baby to face either forwards or towards you. It has 3 recline positions in the forward-facing mode and 2 recline positions in the rearward-facing mode. It has a lockable, double front swivel wheel with large rear wheels with pneumatic tyres, although check the width of the back wheels is suitable, as some people have said that they are very wide. The wheels are quick release and it has that sporty all-round suspension. The new models from 2008 onwards have an additional seat unit. The standard unit is suitable from birth to 12 months and the additional seat unit is suitable from 12 months onward. It comes complete with an adjustable leg rest for your child’s comfort, a hood, a clip-on baby changing bag, a rain cover and a sun canopy.
A slightly smaller 3 wheeler pushchair by Quinny is the Zapp 3-wheeler stroller as it is 5cm smaller in width when unfolded. But it is only suitable for babies from 6 months unless you use it with a carrycot. It is possible to add a Maxi Cosi Cabrio infant carrier car seat (sold separately) to form a 3-wheeler travel system. It has the usual Quinny all-round suspension and utterly contemporary styling. It is made from an anodised aluminium frame and has a removable hood and rain cover included to protect your baby from the elements.
A really great 3 wheeler pushchair if you have one or more children is Phil & Ted’s Sport 3-wheeler pushchair, it comes in black, red, navy, apple or really funky pink camo or blue camo. It is totally contemporary looking and a fantastic innovative design as it can be a single or a double pushchair. It is perfect for children of different ages as it is suitable from birth to 5 years, it has a 4-position ergonomic seat that adjusts from flat for newborn to upright for toddler. It is lightweight as it has an alloy frame and it is convenient to use with an easy folding system. It has safety features such as single-action double brake and it comes complete with a wrist strap, a reversible handle for user comfort, a sun hood with viewing window, quick release wheels for easy transportation, a lockable front swivel wheel and a large shopping basket to make every day life a little easier. It is narrower than the both the Quinny 3 wheeler pushchairs so it is easy to get around with.
There are lots of other 3 wheeler pushchairs as well as the ones mentioned and it really comes down to personal taste and requirements as to which one you choose.
