Lightweight Pushchairs

by PramLady

One of the things you’ll want to think about when choosing a pushchair is how heavy it is as you will probably have to fold and unfold it, pick it up and carry it on your own. If you use public transport you will have to lift the pushchair with your child in it onto and off buses and trains. If you drive you will have to fold up the pushchair and put it into the car and then get it out again. In general every day use you will encounter stairs and curbs and other obstacles that you have to manoeuvre around and lift a pushchair over. So it will make life much easier if you have a lightweight pushchair.

With the advancement of technology most pushchairs nowadays are very lightweight in comparison to older models. Maclaren were the first to introduce a revolutionary new lightweight pushchair in 1965 based on aeronautical design. It was made from tubular aluminium and its structure could comfortably carry even a large toddler even though it was completely lightweight. The same load-bearing technology has continued to be used to this day to make lightweight pushchairs, making the lives of parents easier in the fast-paced modern, lifestyle.

If your requirements are varied and you can’t meet them all with one pushchair you might want to think about getting a lightweight pushchair to take out with you when you travel on buses or planes, for example when you go on holiday, but have a different one at home for other uses. Most brands make lightweight pushchairs but some are lighter than others and you can check the weight of all pushchairs before you choose one to buy.

As the name suggests Micralite make lightweight pushchairs, such as their Micralite Toro Stroller in stone, a superbly contemporary design with a lightweight aluminium frame. It offers all the benefits of larger, combination pushchairs, while retaining the compactness and versatility of a lightweight stroller and it is very manoeuverable. It has a 3 position seat, large rear wheels with pneumatic tyres, an under seat shopping basket, adjustable handle bars, a flip out sun visor and comes complete with a protective foot boot and a zip on rain cover. The Toro also comes in black, emerald and orange.

Another brand to offer lightweight pushchairs is of course Maclaren, as they have continued their innovative design and use of lightweight materials in their contemporary pushchairs. The Maclaren Quest Sport is a lightweight, stylish stroller but bare in mind it is only suitable from 3 months, so not for newborn babies, up to a maximum weight of 15kg. It has a sturdy, aeronautical-quality aluminium frame, a classic Maclaren one-hand, compact umbrella fold, lockable front swivel wheels, an adjustable leg rest, a shopping basket, a hood with a storage pocket and a UV protective viewing window with reflective accents for night safety and a rain cover.

There are lots of other good lightweight pushchairs so the most important thing to do is look and compare the weights of the different pushchairs when you are looking.
