Prams Pushchairs

by PramLady

Are you looking for a pushchair?

There are literally thousands of prams, pushchairs, buggies and strollers on the market, in varying styles and of different standards.

As it is such an important purchase it is important that you think carefully about what your needs are before buying. Many prams and pushchairs are now designed for babies from birth to toddler but it’s really important that you check the age recommendation as some are only for babies from 6 months.

Newborn and young babies under 6 months need to lie down rather than sit up in a pushchair like a toddler. So if your little one requires this make sure you look at pushchairs, prams or buggies that have a lie back, flat position. You can also get pushchairs that can fit a carrycot on, or that have an adaptor that can hold an infant carrier, to create a pram. You can even attach a baby car seat to some pushchairs so that you don’t need to wake baby up when moving from the car to the buggy.

There are some really great designs out there and some of the best known brands include Silver Cross, Bugaboo, Quinny, Maxi Cosi, Bebecar, Maclaren, Urban Detour, Jane, Graco, Phil and Teds, Chicco, Mutsy, Hauck, Cosatto, Mountain Buggy, Ziko, Britax, Bebe Confort, Emmaljunga, Micralite, Out n About and BabyStyle.

All of these brands make good quality prams, pushchairs and strollers that you can rely on but they all vary in style and features. It is very important to go for quality, as after all the safety of your baby depends on what you choose and as buying a pram or pushchair isn’t cheap you should look at it like an investment. Hopefully whatever you choose first time round will suit you and last for years.

One of the most famous brands making prams and pushchairs is probably Maclaren as they set the standard in the 1960’s when founder, Owen Maclaren invented the first lightweight, umbrella-fold buggy. This invention shaped the future of pushchair design and Maclaren continued to make excellent quality, practical and yet stylish baby products.

They have stuck to the more traditional 4-wheel design pushchair, rather than going for the sportier, contemporary 3-wheel design, and concentrated on ease of use and folding. Their pushchairs are all based on well-designed functionality without any gimmicks.

Another well-known brand with a long history is Silver Cross, they go back as far as 1877 and have had a long relationship with royalty and celebrities buying their products. They produce excellent quality prams, pushchairs and strollers, all contemporary in style but maintaining a feel of traditional values. They embrace a mix of Maclaren quality and traditional pushchair look with trendy, funky styling of the likes of newer brands such as Quinny and Maxi-Cosi.

Quinny pushchairs tend to be trendy 3-wheelers, and even their 4-wheelers look more like 3-wheelers than other more traditional style frames. They mainly have chunky, large wheels and are in brightly coloured fabrics. They look chunky, sporty and durable, like they could handle rough terrain. They are the hardcore, four-wheel drive, off-roader of the buggy world. Maxi-Cosi pushchairs are similar to Quinny in the funky, urban 3-wheeler, chunky-tyre look (even if they have 4 wheels on some models) with sporty design and bright colours.

There are loads of other brands making prams, pushchairs, strollers and buggies so it is worth having a look around and familiarising yourself with each brand to decide which look you like and which ones have the practical features that you need, depending on where you live, how you travel and where you’ll be using it as well as the age of your baby.

Hey great article! I’m researching strollers/prams at the moment and I’m finding its really difficult to come across quality information. I feel as though I actually learnt something from reading this as opposed to the waves of rubbish out there.

What would you say are the most popular selling brands?
