Silver Cross Pushchairs have a long history but they have always been at the forefront of chic, contemporary design. It all began as far back as 1877 when an inventor and engineer called William Wilson, with the help of his wife, started his own business making postal carts and “perambulators” at Silver Cross Street in Leeds. Wilson’s very first “perambulator” was revolutionary as it has the first reversible folding hood and a unique suspension system.
William Wilson died in 1913, by which time he had registered over 30 patents related to pram design and he handed over the company to his three sons. The Silver Cross connection to royalty continued in 1948 when the Queen chose a Silver Cross pram for baby Prince Charles. By this time Silver Cross had replaced plywood bodies with aluminium, producing some of the highest quality prams in the world. Their innovation continued over the decades and in the early 1980’s they launched a lightweight pushchair called the Wayfarer.
